Historical background

Kibungo Level Two Teaching Hospital is located in Ngoma District. Ngoma District is one of the seven districts of the Eastern Province. Kibungo Level Two Teaching Hospital is a public health institution. Kibungo Level Two Teaching Hospital was established in 1932 and in 1982 was extended by the Government of Rwanda. Another new hospital extension was developed with the support of Chinese cooperation in 1992 and inaugurated in 1996. 

Kibungo Level Two Teaching Hospital was upgraded from a District Hospital to a National referral hospital level in 2014 during the Cabinet Meeting conducted on Wednesday, 14th May 2014 (Statement on Cabinet Decisions of 14/05/2014)

In August 2022, the hospital was upgraded to Level Two Teaching Hospital with mission to provide advanced medical care to patients and training to local clinicians.

Kibungo Level Two Teaching Hospital has a capacity of 312 beds and it is mandated to serve Ngoma District with a population of around 410,000. However, the hospital receives referral cases from other Districts countrywide especially for neighboring administrative districts due to the additional expertise of the specialist doctors and specialized services including CT-Scan.

Dr. MUNYEMANA Jean Claude has been the Director General of Kibungo Level Two Teaching Hospital since January 2025. Before his appointment, Dr. MUNYEMANA Jean Claude was the Director General of Kirehe District Hospital.
